Summer has come and gone, but quick on its heels comes fall and there’s something truly rejuvenating about autumn’s arrival. Fall is the perfect time to get your home organized for the winter ahead and inject fresh decorating ideas that feel warm, welcoming and cozy.

10 ways to update your home for fall

1. Picture perfect
If you’re a closet shutterbug, release your inner talent and get snapping! Take photographs of pretty fall foliage or other scenes that say “autumn” to you. Blow your photos up and display them on tables or, create a feature wall in your home using picture rails. Display your photographs in frames of varying shapes, sizes and finishes for amped-up visual appeal. You can change up your photos each season for a continually refreshed look and feel.

2. Welcome wreaths
Wreaths are traditionally associated with Christmas but more and more, wreaths are becoming a fall decorating essential as well. Adorn your front door with a wreath made out of wheat, berries, pinecones or acorns for a simple but elegant way to welcome guests to your home. A simple pinecone wreath, for example, can be updated for the holidays with the easy addition of red berries, green leaves and ribbon.

3. Simple slipcovers
Updating your home doesn’t have to mean blowing a bundle on new furniture. Your existing furniture can get an instant makeover by using slipcovers. Replace cotton slipcovers with thicker fabrics like faux suede and jacquard ones in warm fall colors like chocolate brown, evergreen and rust.

4. Clusters of candles
Candles add a warm glow to any room in the home. Place scented candles in large hurricane vases. Nestle the vases in individual bases made from pinecones or faux fall berries. Candles with woodsy fragrances like pine or balsam or sweet scents like vanilla or cranberry will send a delightful aroma wafting through the air of your home.

5. Mad for plaid
Plaid is a fall favorite. Calling forth thoughts of the Scottish countryside, this pastoral pattern is an easy way to transition your home from summer to fall. Replace cotton throws and cushions with ones graced with plaid. Grays, reds, greens and navy blues are traditional plaid colors and perfectly suit a fall-themed home.

6. Pretty pumpkins
Traditionally on display during Thanksgiving and Halloween, pumpkins make a lovely all-season fall addition. But how do you use them as decorative items, rather than jack-o-lanterns? Simply place a group of three pumpkins on your front porch on top of a welcome mat. Or, carve the insides out of a medium-sized pumpkin and fill the shell with flowers for a beautiful and natural floral display. Try painting a large pumpkin white, and then paint an interesting pattern on top in a different color. Display on a cake stand for a veritably unique centerpiece!

7. A bounty of books
Fall is the perfect time to curl up with a hot cup of tea and a good book. Instead of leaving your books perfectly lined up on your bookcase, pick out the ones you plan to read for the season. Display them in neat stacks on tables around the house. It won’t cost you anything and will also motivate you to read those books that have been collecting dust on your bookshelf!

8. Gorgeous garlands
Pinecones can easily be strung together on a piece of twine to make a long and lovely garland. Beautiful and natural, a pinecone garland looks stunning strung along a staircase banister or a mantelpiece.

9. Change your color palette
Simply adding fall colors to your home will provide a fresh, updated feeling. Swap out light-colored bathroom towels for ones in rich browns and oranges. Switch your bed linens from summer’s light, white cottons to coffee-colored flannels for warmth on cool nights. Add jewel-tone throws and cushions to your sofa.

10. Area rugs
If you’ve got wood or tile flooring throughout your house, warm things up with area rugs during the fall and winter months. Hand-woven or hand-loomed rugs in spice colors like cinnamon, paprika and saffron will instantly pop in a space while also making things a bit more comfortable underfoot.

Nothing completes the interior decoration of any home like curtains. Curtains will provide a soft, warm environment as well as creating color, texture and pattern for your home décor.
It’s amazing how many options and choices of fabrics, rods, tracks and styles are out there for curtains.
We often wonder where to start and this can be confusing causing one to give up before you even get started. Below I have listed a few simple tips to follow I hope this will help.

- Remember the length or height of the hung curtain should be to the floor or the window sill anything in between would look a little odd.

- A huge trend today is puddling curtains; this look is where the curtain is made longer than the height required and puddle on the floor. You must carefully select the fabric so that the curtains sit well. The look is popular in living rooms and bedrooms.

- Keep in mind with puddle curtains on a drawn track that the width of the curtain should not be excessive, because they will tend to become very heavy and difficult to draw the curtains back. You do not want the curtains picking up all the fluff stuff from your floor, a little more detail and attention is required to keep them looking fabulous.

- The top of the curtain for all curtains can be at a ceiling height above or at the top of a window frame or flush with window reveal.

- Your space can play a big part in selecting curtain styles, do keep your choice constant in your home it can look odd if some curtain heads are fixed at different heights to others. This can be noticed when you a view through from room to room or in the same room.

- Remember to follow consistency in design of the window treatments. Allow for a symmetrical form this will create a common flow and balance to the window treatments.

Types of Curtains

- Scarf Drapery this portion of the fabric is uncut it is draped to form an ornamental drapery using a rod or pole.

- Casement Curtain- This style has many names casement curtain, panel curtain and pole top curtain. Casement curtains work best on windows that are not opened and closed often. This is a wonderful curtain to use to add color and texture into a space. The benefit in using casement curtains are low cost, they do not require a heading tape, hooks or curtain tracks. Rod or pole will simply do for this curtain.

- French Pleat Curtain- Normal spaced triple pleats. Forms are by a tape that pulls through cords to create. French pleated curtains are popular tied in an hourglass form these curtains create a formal look. Best when using heavier fabrics like velvets and damasks.

- Pencil Pleat- Is neat and smart creates a full curtain, the pencil pleat hangs in uniform and may be used with a variety of lengths of curtains.

- Café Curtain - These curtains are often used with a valance at the top of the window and used as a decoration to create a tiered effect. Ideal for any room but ideal for a kitchen.

- Tab Top Curtains - This is curtains with fabric loops at the top edge / head. Used with poles or rods. Best used where they will not be drawn frequently. Benefit is they are ready made curtains or panels. Available in many colors, weights, fabrics, designs and they are simple & easy to hang on a rod system. These curtains coordinate well with blinds to add color or texture, as a side curtain puddle on the floor, if a sheer fabric they look beautiful blowing gently.

- Swags (The decorative fabric element over the window) two fixed points on either side of the top window, draping down the center.
- Tails The fabric that hangs down from the end of the swags
- Lambrequin A stiff pelmet that continues down the both sides of the window frame.
- Rosettes Often called the focal point for a curtain arrangement. It is the finishing touch for curtain headings, tiebacks, swags and tails. (Forms are typically rose, choux, knife, pleated and bow).
- Flags are double sided jabots used at the center of the fabric swag.
- Jabots tapered portion of the fabric, self or contrast lined. Pleated and used as a frame on each side of a row of swags.

Curtain Accessories

Tie backs – Used to hold back the curtain from the window. From drama to traditional there are
so many choices out there.

Hold backs – A decorative rigid form of a tie back. Easy to use, attractive and attaches to the wall. (Typically used in a modern style design)

Curtain tracks – Used to hold the curtain and this form are attached to the wall above the window.

•Lighting. Use a desk lamp that has good light pattern that will cover a large area, this helps in preventing eye strains.

•Chair. A Comfortable chair is essential. Find an ergonomic chair this will maximize productivity and reduce discomfort. Seat cushions in bright fun colors and patterns will help your child stay at the desk to his / her homework is complete.

•Compliment. Create places for your child to display accomplishments, like gold stars, awards, art work and a job well done. A reminder of what we achieved is something we all like to see.

Children who have a study space of their own can develop good study habits. Choosing the right colors and furnishings for that space may help your child develop a sense of ownership in the space, and having your children study will help the parents relax. It’s a positive for everyone.
